FIX IT at Flores Automotive

Brake Repair

Brake repairs are crucial for vehicle safety and performance, involving several key components within the braking system.

Key Components

  • Brake Pads: These are friction materials attached to the caliper that press against the brake rotors to slow down or stop the vehicle. Worn brake pads need to be replaced regularly.

  • Brake Rotors (Discs): Rotors are metal discs that the brake pads clamp onto to create friction. They can become worn, warped, or scored over time, necessitating resurfacing or replacement.

  • Brake Calipers: Calipers house the brake pads and are responsible for squeezing them against the rotors. They contain pistons that apply pressure to the pads. If calipers are sticking or leaking, they may need repair or replacement.

  • Brake Lines and Hoses: These carry brake fluid from the master cylinder to the calipers and wheel cylinders. They can develop leaks or blockages, requiring replacement or repair.

  • Master Cylinder: This component generates hydraulic pressure by pushing brake fluid through the system when the brake pedal is pressed. If it fails, you may experience a spongy brake pedal or loss of braking power.

  • Brake Fluid: This hydraulic fluid transmits force from the brake pedal to the brake components. It needs to be topped off or replaced periodically as it absorbs moisture over time.

  • Brake Booster: The brake booster assists in applying the brakes by increasing the force applied to the brake pedal. If it's failing, it can result in a hard brake pedal or reduced braking efficiency.

  • Brake Pedal: The pedal that the driver presses to initiate braking. It is connected to the master cylinder and other brake components. Issues with the brake pedal can affect braking performance.

  • Wheel Cylinders: Found in drum brake systems, wheel cylinders apply force to the brake shoes inside the drum. They can leak or fail, requiring replacement.

  • Brake Shoes: In drum brake systems, brake shoes press against the inside of the drum to create friction and slow the vehicle. Worn shoes need to be replaced.

  • Drum Brakes: In some vehicles, drum brakes are used instead of disc brakes. The brake drums and shoes need periodic inspection and maintenance.

  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) Components: ABS systems include sensors, control modules, and solenoids. Issues with ABS can affect braking performance and safety.

Common Repairs and Maintenance

  • Brake Pad Replacement: Removing old brake pads and installing new ones. This often involves checking the condition of the rotors and calipers.

  • Rotor Resurfacing or Replacement: Resurfacing involves grinding the rotors to remove grooves and ensure a smooth surface. If rotors are too worn, they may need replacement.

  • Caliper Repair or Replacement: Addressing issues like leaking calipers or replacing them if they are not functioning properly.

  • Brake Line and Hose Replacement: Replacing damaged or leaking brake lines and hoses to ensure proper fluid flow and braking performance.

  • Master Cylinder Replacement: Replacing the master cylinder if it’s failing or leaking.

  • Brake Fluid Flush: Draining and replacing old brake fluid to remove moisture and contaminants from the system.

  • Brake Booster Replacement: Replacing a faulty brake booster to restore proper braking assistance.

  • Wheel Cylinder and Drum Brake Maintenance: For vehicles with drum brakes, replacing or servicing wheel cylinders and brake shoes, and checking the condition of the drum

Maintaining and repairing these components as needed helps ensure your vehicle’s braking system functions safely and effectively.
